Laid out as a planned village in 1821 by Walter Frederick Campbell and named after his wife, Port Ellen comprises of pretty whitewashed houses built around the golden sands of Leodamais Bay. An ideal spot for children to swim, play and hunt for crabs.
The village offers visitors a variety of restaurants, hotels and bars, a well stocked grocery store, newsagent with delicatessen, post office and some other small shops.
The road travelling north east of the village is one of the island’s most attractive coastlines. Leading to three of Islay’s world famous distilleries, Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig, all of which welcome visitors for a dram.
